New Forest Connectivity Requirement for Town and Regional Plans

In 2016, the Vermont legislature passed Act 171, an act relating to timber harvesting. The legislation requires, among other stipulations, that municipal and regional plans indicate important forest blocks and habitat connectors and plan for land development in those areas to minimize forest fragmentation and promote forest health and ecological function. The act provides that a municipal bylaw cannot regulate forestry operations. A Forest Integrity Study Committee was formed to evaluate potential changes to statewide and local forestland planning and regulation, and the committee produced a final report in February 2017.

In the spring of 2018, BCRC will provide information to member towns on requirements that must be reflected in local plans. Please stay tuned for information about a workshop in 2018.
